Many students who once may have participated in community events, social gatherings, extracurricular activities, or sports events were no longer able to due to the nature of the pandemic lockdown and remaining isolated. Many felt extremely depressed, isolated, and lonely due to this severe lack of socialization and loss of social networks, especially students who may have relied on in-person social interactions for social support and validation, and students who may have integrated this into their daily routines. Students may have lost contact with these networks completely due to the severe isolation and mental health challenges the pandemic has brought. Students felt a huge disconnect from their social networks as now many were grappling with the damage COVID-19 had done to their lives and may have isolated themselves even more.

Those with health issues, such as cancer or HIV/AIDS during the pandemic had an increased rate of mortality if they developed COVID-19 because of their already weakened immune systems and/or preexisting conditions. Those with health issues not only had to deal with the disease or virus they were struggling with, but now increased rates of anxiety and fear that they may catch COVID-19 and face death prematurely. Many individuals with health issues also faced difficulties during the pandemic accessing essential medical care and treatments due to disruptions in healthcare services, such as canceled appointments, delayed surgeries, and limited access to specialists.
