I'll intermingle every thing he does with Cassio's suit

reputation is an idle and most false imposition: oft got without merit, and lost without deserving

Recalls, reminds the reader, is reminiscent of, calls to mind, brings to mind

writers remembered as the first to break a way to create a real American style of writing =/= European style

Livre I, page 67

Which poet often uses distributed stress (when it's not clear which of two consecutives syllabes is stressed)?

Women:Mrs Van Buren to Esther talking about suffragettes: point of view of anti-suffragettes, shows that sexism was so deeply enrooted in society that even women (especially from high classes) believed in it and accepted it. Also shows that it wasn't easy to fight against it because it was badly seen in society.

Dreams and desires:Esther to Mayme, about Mrs Van Buren: different needs and desires depending on social classes. As a prostitute who doesn't make much money, Mayme likes to be well dressed, to be considered as such, whereas Mrs Van Buren wants to feel more attractive and sexy, as she lacks physical intimacy with her husband. She also seeks to be a bit provocative, even if nobody sees it.

Social inequalities / Esther:Esther to Mrs Van Buren: Esther, having had to work very young, has received no education, because of her low social class. Also important to the plot as the relation with George is therefore based on a lie.

Racism / Social inequality:George in his second letter to Esther, talking about the Panama canal: reflection on the exploitation of cheap labour force, composed of coloured men, who only have access to hard, not well-paid jobs, and receive no recognition for their work. Also, good style (metaphor) plus intellectual thoughts = contrast with George's language (shows the deception, foreshadows the end)

Dreams and desires:George to Esther in one of his letters: he is writing love letters, but we can see that his true desire is to belong to the modern world of the city, and to find his place in it (also shows that he doesn't really love Esther, but her environment).

Love and marriage:Esther to George, right after they married: reflects the whole relationship between the 2, but also shows that this marriage isn't really out of love, but merely a need to follow social conventions.
